    What is Shoulder Replacement?

In a shoulder replacement, the damaged bone is removed and replaced with plastic and metal components (implants). The name of this procedure is also called shoulder arthroplasty.

Types of Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Understand the 4 Types of Shoulder Replacement Surgery and Choose the Right Path to Recovery!

    Hemiarthroplasty

Only the ball and stem are changed during this treatment. Your natural socket and the stem that is attached to the ball are articulated.

    Resurfacing hemiarthroplasty

This procedure includes removing the humeral head's joint surface and replacing it with a prosthesis that resembles a cap without a stem.

    Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement

A highly polished metal ball attached to a stem on the humeral side and a plastic cup on the glenoid socket replace the arthritic joint.

    Stemless Total Shoulder Arthroplasty

This type of total shoulder arthroplasty preserves bone by attaching the metal ball to the upper arm without using a stem.

    Who Needs Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

You can consider shoulder replacement if you have:
    • Middle-aged and older people who suffer from chronic shoulder pain, which is typically brought on by arthritis or persistent rotator cuff issues.
    • Severe pain that interferes with daily activities such as dressing, washing, etc.
    • Resting pain that may hamper a good night’s sleep
    • Loss of motion and/or weakness in the shoulder
    • Failure to improve with other treatment such as medication, cortisone injection or physical therapy

Deciding factors for shoulder replacement surgery

    • A rotator cuff that is entirely ripped and cannot be repaired
    • Arthritis due to a cuff tear
    • A failed shoulder replacement in the past
    • Difficulty moving your arm over your head or away from your side due to severe shoulder pain

What are the reason for getting a Shoulder Replacement?

    Shoulder Replacement

Patients with joint problems have the option of having shoulder replacement surgery. Osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, avascular necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or (rarely) serious fractures from trauma or falls are the common reasons why it’s done. In general, all alternative treatment options—like physical therapy and medications—are taken into account first.

    Advantages of Shoulder Replacement Surgery

    • Surgery to replace the shoulder helps the shoulder regain motion, strength, and function while also reducing pain.
    • 95% of patients have pain-free function one year after surgery, allowing them to work on strengthening and moving their shoulder.
    • The joint is strengthened and stabilized

    Anatomy

The link between the chest and arm is formed at the shoulder. The clavicle serves as a strut holding the shoulder bone together (scapula). Approximately 70% of shoulder motion is a result of the scapula articulating with the humerus (the remaining motion occurs between the scapula and the thorax). Three bones make up your shoulder: the collarbone, the scapula, and the humerus, which is the upper arm bone (clavicle).

A stable gliding surface over bursal structures, the motion between the shoulder blade and scapula is not prone to dislocation. However, there is not much bone support at the articulation of the humerus and scapula. This is due to the humerus’s huge ball and small scapular-side socket—consider the minimal stability a golf ball has on a tee.

    Causes

The rotator cuff, a group of four muscles on the inside of the shoulder, provides stability and range of motion above shoulder height.
When shoulder arthritis is present along with an intact rotator cuff, an anatomic or conventional shoulder replacement is advised since the rotator cuff is required to stabilize the humerus ball.

    • Osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy
    • Avascular necrosis
    • or rheumatoid arthritis are the conditions most frequently causing shoulder replacement surgery
    • Moderate to severe pain while resting
    • Loss of motion and weakness in your shoulder
    • Continued pain even after taking anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections
